Topic: Street Fighter 4

So I saw Adam made some fanart on the Crapworks, which means now's as good a time as any to discuss it. Did anyone here pick it up?

To be honest, I thought about it, but then I remembered how much I suck, and have ALWAYS sucked at Street Fighter. I got the Street Fighter Anniversary Collection a while ago, and I had to return it because I could NOT beat the second contender on the lowest difficulty setting no matter how hard I tried. It's weird, because I'm at least passable at King of Fighters and Fatal Fury, and can dominate the CPU with anyone on any difficulty in Guilty Gear, but Street Fighter has always been the one wall I could never climb.

I know that SF4 has a new system called "Focus Attacks" or something, which is pretty much exactly the same thing as Roman Cancels from Guilty Gear, so at least I could probably handle that, but fat chance of me ever landing a goddamn punch on anyone to make use of it.

What do you guys think?

Re: Street Fighter 4

It's much different from the other Street Fighter games, so who knows, maybe you'll be better at it.

My 360s video cables are shot, so, not buying much of anything for it right now.

Re: Street Fighter 4

I'll probably try renting it, now that I've remembered that you can do that. One other thing that concerns me about getting this game is how ill-suited the 360 controller is for fighting games, but the official arcade stick is actually more expensive than the game itself!

I've always been bad at using arcade sticks, too, and usually stick with D-Pads, ignoring my better judgement. It may hurt like a bitch to 2H-8K-P-214S-236K-FRC-6P-2363214H, but goddammit, I can pull it off much better than I can with a stick.

Re: Street Fighter 4

I've had some time to play it, and for the most part I had a lot of fun. Even if you're traditionally not good at Street Fighter, I'd give it a shot, as I think they have done a lot to make the game more accessible. The game's presentation is really nice, although the anime cutscenes are a bit on the lame side. I really would have preferred openings and endings using the game's stylized cg art over the half-hearted cel animation. Honestly, the Street Fighter II anime from over 10 years ago has nicer animation than the cutscenes in SF4.

As far as the new characters go, I could really care less for them. With the exception of Gouken and Abel, they don't feel very at home in SF, and I really would have preferred they be replaced by some of the Third Strike characters, like Ibuki, Makoto, or Dudley. Heck, I wouldn't mind Q either.

One thing I can't stress enough is just how frustrating and buggy some of the detection is. It literally seems like Zangief can throw you during absolutely any animation, regardless of how obvious it is that you are already hitting him or are not in range. The balance is also a little unfair in that Zangief seems to deal much more damage, take less damage, and have more health than any of the other characters. In my opinion, he's a broke character, and really oughta be patched.

Other than Zangief (and of course the totally unfair and unfun last boss, Seth), the game is great fun, and even if you weren't good at 2 or 3, you've got a fair chance of picking this game up with ease. I just hope this leads to a new Darkstalkers game, hehe...

Re: Street Fighter 4

If it does lead to a new Darkstalkers game, hopefully they'll keep the same Morrigan sprites as a joke.

That's because they need something to fix for the upcoming Street Fighter 4: Champion Hyper Strike Final Edition!

Re: Street Fighter 4

From what I've heard, Sagat is much more overpowered than Zangief is. But apparently that's just because everyone else plays as Ken online.

Also, the game needs more Dudley. Maybe they can add him in for Street Fighter 4: Hyper Fighting XX#Reload ^Core+ Slash: Tournament Edition.

Re: Street Fighter 4

Oh my god you almost made the same joke simultaneously. That would have been beautiful.
Yes, I would not mind me some Dudley, and I've also heard people say Sagat is overpowered, although I haven't really experienced it first hand. He seems good and all, and he's pretty tough, but if they powered him up at all then it is in a much more subtle, much less game breaking way, at least as far as I've noticed.
I've heard that they intend on releasing T. Hawk as a downloadable character. Hooray.

Re: Street Fighter 4

Now that I think of it, Sagat's always been a pain in the DONKEY. He was always a sticking point for me in Capcom vs. SNK 2, for instance.

Move forward? TIGER!
Move backward? TIGER!
Crouch? TIGER!
Projectile? TIGER!
Jump? TIGER! APRICOT!

He was hard enough with rolls and instant dodges; I don't want to think about fighting him without them.

Oh goodness. Is that a shout-out to the profanity filters on our boards of yore? I'd forgotten about that.

He's strong. He's incredible. He's gonna burst into flames. Super Robot Coral Q!

Re: Street Fighter 4

I don't remember what any of the others were, but yeah. My mind is like a trap for useless info bites. But I digress.

This is the primary source of my concerns.

I already had worries about the game, but this reaffirmed them.

Re: Street Fighter 4

Yea, alot of good points here. Still, there are definitely people I know who weren't good at Street Fighter who are pretty damn good at 4. I honestly think our mutual friend Jimmy stopped playing Street Fighter in our middle school days because of me, but beats me pretty frequently at number 4.  Maybe he's cheating, who knows.
