Topic: Gonna Start Working Again

After a long period of inactivity other than the odd piece of fan art here and there, I'm gonna start working on a comic. In fact, I'm working on the only comic anyone really wanted me to do: Zweihander. Gonna need a new title, though. Still thinking on that one.

I'm gonna start off by retelling the first story, the one where they rescue Jeremy Coinsnap the Lone Gunman's Sister. But before that, design sketches!

I've tweaked Zweihander and Jeremy Coinsnap the Lone Gunman's designs a bit:

I've been toying with Zweihander for a while now, and this is actually pretty toned down compared some of the concepts I've come up with. The idea was to make his face more flexible and expressive, but I just couldn't totally get rid of his big ol' eyebrows. They come and go as the frame allows. That same technology also went into his sword, since it's just way too big to show all the time.

Just minor stuff here. I've always been fond of the fact that his first appearance in the comic was literally the first time I drew him- and back then I didn't even use pencils (because idiocy). Like Zweihander, I was just trying to make him more expressive, so his hat's now his main expression helper. Also, he has a holster. He could have had a Schrodinger Weapon like Zweihander, but the holster and belt make him look cooler.

He was the little guy that worked with Machinegunhands, remember? By the time I did the hair monster story, the setting had become home to the cartoony, the anime-inspired, and the more realistic (if anything I drew then could be considered "realistic"). But I've decided that it's funnier if the three main characters are the only outright cartoony characters, with everyone else being less stylized.

Sheriff Justice Freedom will be present this time, but since his design doesn't really need changing, I haven't made a sketch. I have a bunch of drawings of him somewhere, though.

I don't have a website anymore, so I guess I'll be using a blog until I can find something more permanent. You should start seeing real material on the June 1st. And of course, if anyone has a new name they'd like to suggest, I'm all ears. I thought I was on to something with "New Fangled Picture Shows," but it turns out that's the name of a themed blog.

What's the name of the word for things not being the same always. You know. I'm sure there IS one. Isn't there?
There must be a word for it... the thing that lets you know time is happening. IS there a word?

Re: Gonna Start Working Again

Actually, scratch that. Let this be a lesson: don't mark your launch date exactly one week after you first THINK of the idea. I wasn't able to come up with a plot outline I was happy with, and to be honest, I'm not sure I could do Zweihander full-time. I don't know much about comedy, and if I had to do an entirely silly series, it would show pretty quickly. I'm much more comfortable writing action and melodrama with a touch of camp.

In fact, there's something I've been wanting to work on for a while, but only a few minor issues kept me from pursuing it. But if I actually start putting some effort into it, I could be drawing it in no time.

Oh man! This is what I get for not going on the forums like... ever...

This is awesome! Dude, even if you just do one more Zweihander story I'd be thrilled. I love the new designs. I miss Zweihander terribly, dude. I'd love to see whatever you've got, so please feel free to keep posting stuff here!

There is actually a Yugioh 5Ds card that looks startlingly like Jeremy Coinsnap the Lone Gunman. I'll post a picture as soon as I find one, so that you can get mad.

Re: Gonna Start Working Again

"Don't know much about comedy"? The Zweihander comics are among the funniest things I've ever read. I liked it so much that I appropriated the Coinsnap name for my online gaming excursions.

I can see where you'd be worried about it wearing thin, though. But hey, it didn't stop the Bobobo guy.

Re: Gonna Start Working Again

Eh, maybe I actually will go ahead and at least do the remake of the original story. I keep running into dead ends with all my other ideas, so why not? We'll see how it goes from there.

And that Yu-Gi-Oh card? Actually, I had been worried for a long time that Jeremy Coinsnap the Lone Gunman may be a total ripoff of something else, since the first time he appeared in the comic was literally the first time I drew him. So far, that's been avoided even if I know he's not that original- Orko, for instance. I've mostly been worried because Zweihander ended up looking exactly like Brave Fencer Musashi. Hell, I gave him Popeye arms intending to make him look more original, only to find out that Musashi had THOSE, too!

No it's fucking not. Why do you people let me say stupid shit like this? I need to get back in my element. You know I was going to play it completely straight until Zweihander showed up a few pages in? I'll have you know I was planning on making this somewhat historically accurate, too. Sometimes I just don't get it. There's gonna be time-traveling cyborgs, and everyone's gonna ride giant welsh corgis because I promised never to draw horses again back in the Newtrul days. I wanted to play THAT straight? Fuck me.

My computer bricked, so I lost that page. Didn't set the right tone anyway. I've got a new one in mind. It involves spiders. And robots. But not robot spiders, that'd just be silly.

This is probably the best thing I've ever done. That's who I am. I can do other things, but if I'm gonna make this work, I'm going to have to see the forest for the trees, and not try to imagine it as a soap opera. I'm not sure if that makes sense. I can write more than one story. I don't have to try to do everything in one. Author/Draft died when I started taking Ace seriously. Newtrul died when I tried to add plot threads upon plot threads. All of the MetaFiction trials died because I couldn't decide on their identities.

Stop the shit, RWill.
