Re: The Inevitable Video Game Thread, Thus Renamed

So people say Demon's Souls is difficult. I have to agree.

Responding to Johnny's post about Modern Warfare 2: I was watching someone play mw1 and mw2 yesterday side by side, and honestly I could not tell a difference. MW2 seems to be really really popular so I expected something interesting about it, but from what people (who have played/beaten the game) it doesn't seem very impressive.

Anyone played it through and found anything new and exciting about it?

Re: The Inevitable Video Game Thread, Thus Renamed

To be honest, I don't have a lot of interest in it. I never really saw what was so great about the first Modern Warfare. The campaign was kind of cool, I guess, but it didn't really wow me with anything I hadn't seen before in other games, and the multiplayer seemed silly. Rewarding players that are doing well by making them do better just seems ridiculous; Street Fighter never gives the player with more KOs extra super combos or anything, that would just be annoying.

I did find one thing about this game amusing. While playing online I was once treated to 10 minutes of an 11 year old boy attempting to assure his friends that he had received oral sex at the mall. It really made me re-evaluate what I was doing, and I've never even considered playing Modern Warfare again.

Demon's Souls looks pretty miserable, but in a good way.

Re: The Inevitable Video Game Thread, Thus Renamed

Interesting multiplayer story. I can never tell what half the people with mics are saying in online games so I generally just ignore them even if they're attempting to talk tactics/strategy. Though somehow all the expletives always come out crystal clear.

Demon's Souls is miserable; its got a pretty dark atmosphere and isn't at all soft. There are three basic rules I've discovered about Demon's Souls:
1) You will die.
2) You will lose those thousands of souls you've stockpiled at some point
3) Rules 1 & 2 will occur frequently.

Bosses aren't impossible, they just seem that way the first time you encounter them. Naturally once you learn their pattern/moves its basically megaman: jump now, roll then, slash here, etc. Of course its much harder than megaman, since bosses can kill you in 1 hit (well technically 2, the first hit knocks you down and then the 2nd hits during the recovery frames and kills you, at least that's how I always die if I'm not OHKO'd).

But despite all of that I still enjoy the game a lot. The game is challenging and you gotta pay a lot of attention everywhere (you can even die in the main base area). But the difficulty is not cheap like ninja gaiden with projectile spams or interrupting throws.

Re: The Inevitable Video Game Thread, Thus Renamed

I haven't really been able to get into Demon's Souls just yet. But I've beaten 1-1, 1-2, and 2-1, and don't know where to go from there. I've been trying 5-1, but I always get killed by the stingrays and gold skeletons on the cliffside. I think it's time for me to invest in a crossbow.

You can try World 3 just be careful of the jail keepers. World 5 has annoying fire enemies so I would avoid till you get the purple flame shield.

I died so many times on 4-1 I learned how I could run straight to the boss after getting into the castle courtyard (still need to kill those two skeles on the ramparts though). A thief's ring can help you avoid the flying mantas, or any spell/equip which adds the cloak effect.

Bows are usually better, I don't think you can manually aim the x-bows or they don't shoot as far.

Also just because an armor adds more defense doesn't mean its better. Most of the armors in the game are borderline cosmetic since you're better off dodging than trying to tank (unless you have pure end and str builds).

Re: The Inevitable Video Game Thread, Thus Renamed

I've decided that my Temple Knight wasn't gonna make it. In situations that favored him, he was godlike. Whenever I'm in a cramped space, I can just two-hand my halberd and stab five guys at once, and my armor was good enough that I could just laugh off most blows. But when I have to deal with enemies at a distance, like those Mantas, or magical creatures like the Mindflayers in the Tower of Latria, I just couldn't win.

I started playing as a female Royal yesterday, and just steamrolled over Phalanx, Adjudictator, Leechmonger, Mecha-Spider (can't remember its name), and Tower Knight in that order, without dying once, and without summoning any Blue Phantoms. So we'll see how far this goes. (Also, I killed the Vanguard in the Shrine of Storms)

But I'd have to disagree with you when it comes to Heavy Armor. It all comes down to play style, but I find a thick plate of steel between you and the enemy to be far more reliable than any fancy footwork you can pull off. As long as you're strong enough to actually move around in your armor without feeling like you're on King Kai's planet, the only downside is that you can't roll properly, which I don't put too much faith in to begin with. You can still move quickly enough to backstab any enemy in their recovery frames after their big, strong attack comes face to face with a tall shield that's a half-foot thick. As long as you have a decent amount of stamina (which you should, if you're primarily a melee character), you can take plenty of hits before you drop your guard. I laugh at your problem with getting killed in one hit or getting knocked down and killed in your recovery. In Soviet Russia, I do the one-hit killing!

Ah yea I did a Temple Knight first and changed to Thief after the tutorial stage. Now I have a 70-ish Thief and 40-ish Mage. Magic really wails on all the first tier bosses (except Armored Spider; Royal has the advantage of having Soul Arrow instead of Flame Shot, which he laughs at).

I dunno about the heavier gear. At best the strongest armor you can get is either Brushwood or Scale I think about 20-40 defense per piece. However, both sets have pretty hefty stamina drains which is what really kills most heavy armors for me. You have to spend more time not blocking or not attacking to restore your stamina in order to attack or block hits. Well either way it is, like you said, up to play-style. I didn't see much impact from higher item Defense so I just go with whatever combo of light/medium gear I liked looking at.

Nice on beating Adjudicator without dying, he annoyed me both times around and is the boss that kept knocking me down and KO'ing me.. For boss fights, I prefer being able to roll without putting dents in the floor...It'll get me out of Flame Lurker's fire bursts or lets me get inside Penetrator's swings. Granted you are right about normal enemies, aside from certain BPs, most enemies are pretty easy to handle and rolling is actually more cumbersome since you aren't maneuvering to a back-stab. My really main beef with heavy armor isn't with limited rolling, it is that I like to keep my inventory pretty light, so I can pick up ores; I've lost so many ores in World 2 due to weight overload (and that's with the Hercules ring) that I try to keep my inventory weight under 30-40% going into worlds.

Speaking of which, if you haven't already; killing the Reapers in 5-2 is a good source of darkmoon ores (and lots of souls), which is perfect for Mages or Royals. Magical Damage, bonus from Magic Stat, and MP recovery is pretty sweet.  And you should already have that one Crescent Falchion to upgrade.

Currently both of my characters are stuck against the Blue Dragon. Takes waaay too many arrows to bring down that I never feel like doing it; I suppose I'll just have to time his fire patterns.

Re: The Inevitable Video Game Thread, Thus Renamed

I was reluctant to go back to the Valley of Defilement after the first level got me struck with the plague with no way to heal (to my surprise, as I ended up having plenty of ways to heal with my Temple Knight without ever buying any), and because the enemies there gave such crappy souls.

Don't congratulate me on Adjudicator. All I did was hang out on a staircase and blast him with Soul Arrow. My range made it so that he would only use vertical chops, so I just had to shoot him twice, then move a couple feet to the left or right.

Re: The Inevitable Video Game Thread, Thus Renamed

Ugh. Finally beat all the worlds save World 1. I don't want to deal with the Dragon and I realize I can just run past it but I do want its soul. Usually what happens is I sink the 200+ arrows I need to bring it to half and then die, requiring me to do it all over again. Eventually I'll be able to time its fire breath pattern. I also dislike World 5, the poison upgrades to plague which is really annoying.

I ended up fighting Adjudicator the same way, since I couldn't figure out which target to melee for damage. Still died once from a random tongue strike.

Bah, guess I'll try to kill that Dragon now, maybe my shiny new DSS will help.

Re: The Inevitable Video Game Thread, Thus Renamed

I've also been playing Dragon Age a lot lately. Not one of Bioware's best releases, but it's still pretty good. Now if only I could transfer my Arcane Warrior/Blood Mage into Demon's Souls, I'd be unstoppable.
