Gonna Start Working Again

After a long period of inactivity other than the odd piece of fan art here and there, I'm gonna start working on a comic. In fact, I'm working on the only comic anyone really wanted me to do: Zweihander. Gonna need a new title, though. Still thinking on that one.

I'm gonna start off by retelling the first story, the one where they rescue Jeremy Coinsnap the Lone Gunman's Sister. But before that, design sketches!

I've tweaked Zweihander and Jeremy Coinsnap the Lone Gunman's designs a bit:

I've been toying with Zweihander for a while now, and this is actually pretty toned down compared some of the concepts I've come up with. The idea was to make his face more flexible and expressive, but I just couldn't totally get rid of his big ol' eyebrows. They come and go as the frame allows. That same technology also went into his sword, since it's just way too big to show all the time.

Just minor stuff here. I've always been fond of the fact that his first appearance in the comic was literally the first time I drew him- and back then I didn't even use pencils (because idiocy). Like Zweihander, I was just trying to make him more expressive, so his hat's now his main expression helper. Also, he has a holster. He could have had a Schrodinger Weapon like Zweihander, but the holster and belt make him look cooler.

He was the little guy that worked with Machinegunhands, remember? By the time I did the hair monster story, the setting had become home to the cartoony, the anime-inspired, and the more realistic (if anything I drew then could be considered "realistic"). But I've decided that it's funnier if the three main characters are the only outright cartoony characters, with everyone else being less stylized.

Sheriff Justice Freedom will be present this time, but since his design doesn't really need changing, I haven't made a sketch. I have a bunch of drawings of him somewhere, though.

I don't have a website anymore, so I guess I'll be using a blog until I can find something more permanent. You should start seeing real material on the June 1st. And of course, if anyone has a new name they'd like to suggest, I'm all ears. I thought I was on to something with "New Fangled Picture Shows," but it turns out that's the name of a themed blog.

Ultimo (Stan Lee, Hiroyuki Takei)

[This is in response to Kninsurai's post about Ultimo, split here because we have forum categories now! —ION]

Yea, I looked into that a while ago when Jump did a preview of it. I wouldn't say Takei's artwork is exactly the same, there are some notable differences, but he certainly hasn't made any dramatic changes, like you could see in Nobuhiro Watsuki's recent works. It seems to me that most artists, specifically Jump artists, don't really change a whole lot. Usually its either a matter of artwork getting slightly cleaner (like in Nobuyuki Anzai's case) or less clean (Yashihiro Togashi). To be fair though, it seems to me that most Japanese readers aren't really into change, preferring to see an artist stick with (what they feel) he does best. The best way to really appreciate the changes would be to look at some classic Shaman King, and then look at the new Shaman King chapter's the published in Jump Square a year or so ago. I haven't read through them all (since I never really finished the first run of Shaman King to begin with), but seeing Yoh and the gang in the slightly new art style is a bit jarring.

But yea, back to Ultimo... I only read the first chapter, since thats all Jump previewed, but it was kinda odd. Stan Lee's writing just seems so out of place next to Takei's artwork, which is so expressive. It came off as kinda cheesy to me, and unfortunately I don't think Lee's plot was anything ground breaking, especially not in shonen manga. Worth reading for Lee's little cameo in the beginning, and to see Hiroyuki Takei in action again, but I honestly preferred his work on Jumbor Barutronica, which stupid Jump cancelled after a single volume. Does the series get any more engaging?

Perhaps we need a manga section? [Done —ION.]

Meta-Fiction Wins an Internet

I was trolling through TV Tropes, reading the Gunslinger article, when I noticed the following passage, under Webcomics:

"Jeremy Coinsnap the Lone Gunman from Meta-Fiction is both a parody and a straight example of a Type A. He flips coins and uses them to ricochet bullets at improbable angles, but gets confused when he doesn't have any coins to use. This leads to the question, "How am I supposed to fight using only a gun and a lot of ammo!?" "

Note that Jeremy Coinsnap the Lone Gunman also links to the "Overly Long Name" article.

Congratulations to the author, RWill! The internet has found fit to mention your creation (unless you put that up yourself, in which case....well, aren't you clever).
