Gonna Start Working Again

After a long period of inactivity other than the odd piece of fan art here and there, I'm gonna start working on a comic. In fact, I'm working on the only comic anyone really wanted me to do: Zweihander. Gonna need a new title, though. Still thinking on that one.

I'm gonna start off by retelling the first story, the one where they rescue Jeremy Coinsnap the Lone Gunman's Sister. But before that, design sketches!

I've tweaked Zweihander and Jeremy Coinsnap the Lone Gunman's designs a bit:

I've been toying with Zweihander for a while now, and this is actually pretty toned down compared some of the concepts I've come up with. The idea was to make his face more flexible and expressive, but I just couldn't totally get rid of his big ol' eyebrows. They come and go as the frame allows. That same technology also went into his sword, since it's just way too big to show all the time.

Just minor stuff here. I've always been fond of the fact that his first appearance in the comic was literally the first time I drew him- and back then I didn't even use pencils (because idiocy). Like Zweihander, I was just trying to make him more expressive, so his hat's now his main expression helper. Also, he has a holster. He could have had a Schrodinger Weapon like Zweihander, but the holster and belt make him look cooler.

He was the little guy that worked with Machinegunhands, remember? By the time I did the hair monster story, the setting had become home to the cartoony, the anime-inspired, and the more realistic (if anything I drew then could be considered "realistic"). But I've decided that it's funnier if the three main characters are the only outright cartoony characters, with everyone else being less stylized.

Sheriff Justice Freedom will be present this time, but since his design doesn't really need changing, I haven't made a sketch. I have a bunch of drawings of him somewhere, though.

I don't have a website anymore, so I guess I'll be using a blog until I can find something more permanent. You should start seeing real material on the June 1st. And of course, if anyone has a new name they'd like to suggest, I'm all ears. I thought I was on to something with "New Fangled Picture Shows," but it turns out that's the name of a themed blog.

Mad World

Just picked this game up. While moving, I discovered a veritable ass load of games to trade in, so I ended up getting it for free (with $20 left over).

Dear God, this is fun. I haven't had this much fun since Saint's Row 2, and before that I have no idea. Make no mistake, this is brutal stuff. Part of the TUTORIAL involves you stuffing a guy into a tire, impaling his skull with a street sign, then repeatedly goring him on wall-mounted spikes. So if that ain't your thing, move along.

The game is basically No More Heroes with all the crappy free-roaming and grinding cut out, and pretty much everything else tweaked for the better. You jump from level to level and beat up an army of mooks while occasionally participating in minigames like throwing as many people you can into a jet turbine, and then you fight a gigantic boss. The game is just like one of those old arcade beat-em-ups like Streets of Rage taken to a whole new level.

The motion controls are similar to No More Heroes' but there are more opportunities here. You need to waggle to operate your wrist-mounted chainsaw and perform backhands and uppercuts, but it really shines during the finishing moves. While punching a guy silly, uppercut him, then turn on your chainsaw and point up to bisect him. When a guy's on the ground, grab his foot and start slamming him back and forth over your head. Swing him around and caber toss him into a garbage can/torture device. It's pure fun.

If you've got a Wii, go and check it out. It's certainly not like you're using it for much else right now.

America: the RPG: the Comic

I'm sure some of your are familiar with the Carnival Madness Studios production "America: The RPG", currently on indefinite hiatus due to none of us being able to make games. Well, I still love the idea of a horribly misrepresented view of American history dripping with anime goodness, so I'd like very much to do a brief comic adaptation for Kodansha's upcoming competition.

I'd really like to begin the comic with George fighting the monster cherry tree, as was planned in the game, but I also want to get as many of the characters in as possible. Any suggestions? I'll most definitely post whatever I come up with, and inthe mean time:

The Inevitable Video Game Thread, Thus Renamed

Hello,

I have very little money and plenty of time on my hands. I think the situation calls for a decent JRPG for my somewhat neglected PS2.

Going back to the RPGs I own but never finished isn't doing much for me. I really, really like Dark Cloud 2, but there are just so many minigames and sidequest elements to it that the pace makes me sort of sleepy. And Star Ocean 3 is terrible. Absolutely, utterly terrible. I could create an internet hate shrine of everything that annoys me about it (I could spend my time THAT way instead, I guess)

So I'm looking for something to take up time. It doesn't have to be an RPG necessarily, but I'd prefer something with a huge time investment so I'm not looking to buy something else anytime soon. Preferably I'd like it to be under $30 and last gen. So far I've been considering:

- Disgaea (leaning towards this)
- Dragon Quest VIII
- Grandia 2

I've already played Final Fantasy X and XII, so they're out.

(Rob, this is pretty much directed towards you. Suggest Xenosaga and I'll disembowel you)

Yeah, I know this show is old news and all, but considering I was like... 10 when this show started, I didn't really get into it. UNTIL RECENTLY! I just finished watching the first season, and I'm actually kind of upset I never sat down and gave this show more than a glance before! I can't quite put my finger on it, but I really do find it very entertaining, so much so that I even played the unbelievably boring GAME BOY COLOR game for much longer than I care to admit. More on that later, though...

ANYWAY, I like it. Lookin' forward to watching Season 2. Anybody else down with the Buffster?

Ultimo (Stan Lee, Hiroyuki Takei)

[This is in response to Kninsurai's post about Ultimo, split here because we have forum categories now! —ION]

Yea, I looked into that a while ago when Jump did a preview of it. I wouldn't say Takei's artwork is exactly the same, there are some notable differences, but he certainly hasn't made any dramatic changes, like you could see in Nobuhiro Watsuki's recent works. It seems to me that most artists, specifically Jump artists, don't really change a whole lot. Usually its either a matter of artwork getting slightly cleaner (like in Nobuyuki Anzai's case) or less clean (Yashihiro Togashi). To be fair though, it seems to me that most Japanese readers aren't really into change, preferring to see an artist stick with (what they feel) he does best. The best way to really appreciate the changes would be to look at some classic Shaman King, and then look at the new Shaman King chapter's the published in Jump Square a year or so ago. I haven't read through them all (since I never really finished the first run of Shaman King to begin with), but seeing Yoh and the gang in the slightly new art style is a bit jarring.

But yea, back to Ultimo... I only read the first chapter, since thats all Jump previewed, but it was kinda odd. Stan Lee's writing just seems so out of place next to Takei's artwork, which is so expressive. It came off as kinda cheesy to me, and unfortunately I don't think Lee's plot was anything ground breaking, especially not in shonen manga. Worth reading for Lee's little cameo in the beginning, and to see Hiroyuki Takei in action again, but I honestly preferred his work on Jumbor Barutronica, which stupid Jump cancelled after a single volume. Does the series get any more engaging?

Perhaps we need a manga section? [Done —ION.]
